Amid Maryland mayor Patrick Wojahn’s arrest and subsequent resignation, we take a look at the politician’s political party.
The mayor of Park College City submitted a letter of resignation on Thursday, March 2, marking his immediate removal from the post. He was arrested and is now in custody after police searched his home on February 28.
Here is what we know about former Maryland mayor Patrick Wojahn, including his political party affiliation, personal life and whether he is a Republican or Democrat.
Who is Patrick Wojahn?
Patrick Wojahn has served as mayor of College Park since 2015 and on City Council since 2007. As per his official bio, Wojahn grew up in Wisconsin and is 47 years old as of 2023.
He graduated from Georgetown University Law Center with a law degree in 2002, as per his LinkedIn page.
Wojahn founded College Park Day, a holiday aimed at bringing residents of the city together, and formed the Neighborhood Stabilization and Quality of Life Workgroup, which sought to tackle housing issues.
Upon being elected in 2015 he said: “I want to see the city that I live in turn into something great, something we can be proud of and that serves all its residents.”
Is the former mayor’s political party Republican or Democrat?
Patrick Wojahn is politically affiliated with the Democratic Party. From 2010 to 2014, which coincided with his time as a Democratic city councilor, he was a public policy analyst at the National Disability Rights Network.
Here he engaged in lobbying and advocacy on a variety of issues impacting people with disabilities, including employment, veterans’ affairs, Social Security benefits, housing, and transportation.
Is the Democrat married?
Patrick Wohjahn is married and openly gay. He lives with his husband, Dave Kolesar, although it is unclear how long the couple has been together. However, Wojhan often posts photos with his husband on Instagram.
In December, they visited the White House to celebrate the Respect for Marriage Act. Kolesar has not yet commented on the situation surrounding Wojahn’s resignation.
Wojahn is in custody at the Prince George’s County Department of Corrections and will soon meet a commissioner who will make a determination on Wojahn’s “bond, or whether he will be held, or whether he will be released on pre-trial release,” Jessica Garth, a representative from the State’s Attorney’s Office, told CNN.
