At the 2009 Junior Olympic National Championships, Katelyn Ohashi made her competitive gymnastics debut at the age of 12. She won the floor exercise, finished second on the uneven bars, and finished fourth in the all-around. She finished first in the competition. Additionally, she competed in the United States Championships, where she finished ninth overall and tied for fourth on the balance beam that year.
At the National Championships, in Dallas, she won the silver medal on floor exercise and finished sixth on beam and tenth all-around. She was also named to the junior national gymnastics team. A year later in March of that year, she won the American Cup’s senior division by defeating U.S. teammate Simone Biles.
