Dan Hughes, beloved TV host, is one of a string of QVC and HSN employees laid off by parent company Qurate Retail amid financial losses.
The layoffs come in an attempt to recover after Qurate reported a loss of $51 million for the fourth quarter of 2022 and a total loss of $2.59 billion in 2022, in contrast to the $340 million profit the company reported in 2021.
A reported 400 employees were fired from the company’s TV channels including legendary hosts Carolyn Gracie and Dan Hughes.

Dan Hughes grew up in Indianapolis
Dan Hughes grew up in the mid-west suburbia of Indianapolis. He said of his childhood: “It was so normal it was almost boring,” but called it “perfect.”
He had a speech impediment as a child
Hughes did not go to Kindergarten due to the fact that he had a speech impediment as a child. His parents enrolled him in speech therapy from the age of four. He attended speech therapy sessions for five years.
He lost his mother at a young age
When he was in his early 20s, Hughes tragically lost his mother to cancer, which affected him deeply.
“Losing her that young changed the timeline of the things that I thought I would do,” he said.
He started out in stand-up comedy
Before his time at QVC, Dan was a stand-up comedian for seven and a half years. When he was in college, his roommate challenged him to do a stand-up set for $100. He accepted and performed that night to an obliging crowd.
He said that actor and comedian Robin Williams was a member of the audience and was impressed by his set.
Hughes first got married at 20
Hughes is currently married to wife Kelly, but he was actually married once before they tied the knot. He was in a short-lived marriage at the age of 20 because he wanted his mom, who was sick at the time, to be able to attend his wedding.
He has been with his wife for 20 years
Dan and Kelly Hughes reportedly shared their wedding vows on 23 June 2001. The couple has been together for more than two decades. On their 20th wedding anniversary, Dan shared a heartwarming Facebook post celebrating their relationship.
Along with a photo from their wedding day, he wrote: “As thankful as I am to QVC for so many years it all pales in comparison to having spent the last 20 years with the most incredible woman!” He described her as his “greatest blessing.”

He’s a huge NASCAR fan
Dan Hughes is a big fan of NASCAR and used to introduce the auto racing company’s merchandise on QVC before the days of the Internet.
He was even referred to as “QVC’s resident NASCAR fan” when he was featured on the cover of QVC’s insider magazine, standing in front of his truck.

Dan Hughes was a QVC host for 33 years
Dan Hughes worked as a host at QVC for 33 years. He hosted a variety of shows on QVC and QVC2 throughout his career, including The Great Outdoors with Dan, Trending on Q, and At Home with Dan.
Hughes announced that he would no longer be working at QVC via Facebook. He said: “It has been a wonderful and lengthy ride. More than I ever expected and as always I am humbled by your kindness.”
