Charles Quinton Murphy was born on the 12th day of July 1959 in Brooklyn, New York City. His father’s name was Charles Edward while his mother’s name was Lillian. He also had a younger brother named Eddie. Murphy’s parents divorced when he was five years old and he and his brother grew up with their mother. Lillian later encountered health problems and the boys had to spend some time in foster care. During this time, Murphy suffered from domestic violence at the hands of his foster mother, but didn’t let that define him.
As a teenager, Charlie Murphy encountered several troubles with the law and eventually ended up in prison. He was released in 1978 and upon his release immediately joined the US Navy. The future Hollywood star served six years in the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1983.
