Nelson Ramón Cruz Martínez Jr was born on July 1, 1980, in Las Matas de Santa Cruz, Dominican Republic to parents, Nelson Cruz Sr., and Dominga Cruz. His father, Nelson Cruz Sr played professional baseball in the Dominican Republic and is also a successful professor just like his mother.
Nelson Cruz was raised alongside his two sisters, Nelsy and Olga. He was initially signed by the New York Mets organization as a non-drafted free agent in 1998. He is a recipient of four Silver Slugger Awards and two Edgar Martínez Awards.
