Why did Mulatto change her name?
Mulatto, or as she will now be known, Latto, confirmed her decision to change her new name back in January 2021. The Rapper spoke with Hot Freestyle in an interview in Jan to reveal her name change plans.
Speaking to the media outlet, she discussed the issue with her then stage name. ‘Mulatto’ is a term that is used to refer to a person of mixed white and Black ancestry. The rapper said that she didn’t want to offend people with her name.
Latto took to her Instagram on Tuesday, May 18 to reveal her new name and also revealed that poster of her new Friday single The Biggest.
Back in December 2020, the He Say She Say rapper, received backlash for her racially charged stage name. Aside from Latto, some other stars from the music industry came under fire too.
For instance, recently fans lashed out on DaniLeigh for teasing her new song called Yellow Bone. Fans believed that the song praised light-skinned women. The rapper later apologized on her Instagram while arguing that she was just exclusively referring to her boyfriend DaBaby’s interests.

The term ‘Mulatto’ has Mexican and Portuguese roots. It is derived from the word “mula” meaning mule, which is the offspring of a horse and a donkey.
