In the Amazon, a suspect admitted to killing and shooting British journalist Dom Phillips and his Brazilian companion Bruno Pereira. According to authorities, the case’s main suspect confessed and recounted what happened to the pair who went missing on June 5. They were last seen near Sao Rafael, a town in Brazil’s northern region.
As per federal investigator Eduardo Alexandre Fontes, Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira, also known as Pelado, informed investigators that he killed the two men with a handgun.
The remains are expected to be identified within days, and if confirmed as the missing men, they would be returned to their families, according to the investigator.

Mr. Phillips’ backpack and boots were among the items found, as were a health card, black trousers, a black sandal, and a pair of boots belonging to Mr. Pereira. On Wednesday, the suspect allegedly confessed to the murders and led investigators to the bodies in a remote region of the Amazon.
Phillips, who was working on a book about Amazon rainforest conservation, and Pereira, who had previously been threatened by illegal fish and wildlife poachers, both received death threats in the days preceding their disappearance.
Moreover, the men’s disappearance has made international news, with journalists and human rights groups urging Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to find them.
