According to officials, Debra White, a Detroit school bus driver, has been charged with failing to turn on the safety stoplights for a 13-year-old boy who was murdered after he was hit by a car while crossing the street.
Zyiar Harris, 13, of Detroit, was struck in the neighborhood of East Nevada and Healy avenues shortly before 5 p.m. on Wednesday (April 6).

Debra is accused of failing to ensure that Zyair Harris could cross the street safely after getting off the bus last Wednesday at about 4:41 p.m. in the area of eastern Nevada and Healy streets.
According to authorities, the school bus’s lights and stop signs were not triggered when Harris crossed the intersection. An adjacent vehicle failed to stop for the bus and collided with Harris as he attempted to cross.
Police were dispatched to the location, where they discovered Harris being treated by medics. According to a GoFundMe set up by the family, the youngster was finally brought to a local children’s hospital for additional treatment, but he died on Sunday.

Debra White was charged in 36th District Court on that allegation and one count of failing to stop at the scene resulting in death on Sunday. Bail was set at $50,000 personal bond by the judge.
White was charged before the boy’s death on Sunday so that further charges might be filed. White has been charged with second-degree child cruelty and failing to halt at a fatal accident scene.
According to police, the case will be investigated by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office once it receives a report from the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Harris’s mother, Casandra Jones, spoke with Local 4 news about her son. “I’m at a loss for words,” Jones said.
Harris’s godmother is Micah Neal. He has a 12-year-old sister who watched the entire incident while waiting outside the house for her brother.
“Words cannot express how much we will miss Zyiar. Nothing can express how fondly we will remember him,” Neal remarked.
Harris was assassinated after school, only 50 yards from his family’s front door.
