US singer Selena Gomez said social media helped her to share her true struggles with her mental health without getting it twisted.
The singer noted that she was not happy when her story was twisted when she first shared it with traditional media.
Selena Gomez has been candid about her mental health journey since revealing that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has made sure to use her platform to bring attention to the importance of mental wellbeing.
More recently, the star was featured in a discussion she had with her mother with a news outlet.
The chat saw Selena open up about how she found social media empowering because she could control what she was saying and be able to directly talk to her fans about her struggles without second-hand interpretations.
Speaking to TheNewsette.com, Selena said the first time she shared her story, it became manipulated:
“But I got so angry that my story was twisted into so many different things.”
msn.com reported Selena as also having mentioned that once she had spoken openly on her own social media, there was no opportunity for people to distort her feelings or misquote her words:
“I think that was my moment when I knew [nobody] was going to take my story away from me. On my own social media, I got to tell the truth. And once I started claiming my own name, I think people understood my mental health journey.”
The hashtag #28YearsWithSelena dominated the internet as fans paid tribute to the influential media personality.
