Following public outcry, a Cardiff museum has taken down a painting of slave owner Thomas Picton.
When it was displayed at the National Museum of Wales (Caerphilly), the painting was in storage.
We delved into the life of Thomas Picton, the reasons why his image was taken down, and the preparations for a new painting of the same name.
WHO WAS THOMAS PICTON?
In 1758, Sir Thomas Picton, a Welsh lieutenant general in the British Army, was born on August 24th.
In 1851, Picton was killed in the Battle of Waterloo after serving in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.
Portraits depicting Picton as a hero fail to mention that he was a notorious slave owner and was tried in England for authorizing the torture of Trinidadian citizens.
Luisa Calderon, a 14-year-old girl who was accused of shoplifting, was one of the victims of the abuse.
WHY HAS THE PORTRAIT OF THOMAS PICTON BEEN REMOVED?
An Amgueddfa Cymru and the Sub Sahara Advisory Panel-led youth movement made the decision to remove the painting of Picton from the Welsh National Museum, which had been on display for more than a century.
This is not the only piece of Thomas Picton art that has been removed as a result of the growing Black Lives Matter movement.
Picton’s marble statue at Cardiff’s Hall of Heroes will be removed in 2020 after a vote by the city council.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE PORTRAIT OF THOMAS PICTON?
The picture is currently in storage and will be replaced with Albert Houthuesen’s 1937 painting, ‘Hedger and Ditcher: Portrait of William Lloyd.’
The National Museum’s youth-led program will restore Picton’s portrait, but it will do so in a new interpretation that more accurately depicts Picton’s life and history.
