Movies and acting career

As he was about to graduate in 1982, he won hearts when his dissertation film Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads earned him a Student Academy Award.

Lee had previously pursued a career in directing, investing $175,000 in his first feature film, You Must Have It. Filming lasted only two weeks, becoming one of the highest-grossing films produced at the time, grossing more than $7 million. With the proceeds, the actor founded his own production company called 40 Acres and A Mule.
The filmmaker, who is no new controversy for adding some provocative statements and injecting some such elements into his films, took a more ambitious step in 1989 in the development of a film that tries to portray his difficult childhood in Brooklyn entitled Do the right thing.
The comedy-drama was a huge hit and became a regular name on the list of the greatest films of all time. The legendary film director kept focusing on social and political issues throughout Sam’s Summer and She Hates Me on his filmography. His film 4 Little Girls , which chronicled the 1963 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, received an Academy Award nomination in 1998.
