Salma Hayek was born Hayek Jimenez to Diana Jimenez Medina and Sami Hayek Dominguez on September 2, 1966 in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico. Her father, who was once the mayor of his hometown and owns/runs an industrial equipment company, was also an oil company executive, while her mother is a former opera singer-turned-talent scout. She is of Mexican, Lebanese and Spanish descent.
Hayek grew up in a wealthy familywith the opportunity to attend the best schools. Around the age of 12, she was sent to the United States to attend the Sacred Heart Academy in Grand Coteau, Louisiana, where she was diagnosed with dyslexia. She attended one of the most renowned universities in Mexico, the Universidad Iberoamericana, and studied international relations there.
Hayek began her acting career at the age of 23 when she landed the role that made her star in Teresa (1989). After the critical acclaim she received for her performance, the young actress moved to Los Angeles in 1991 to continue honing her craft under the tutelage of Stella Adler. In 1994 she starred in another Mexican film. El Callejón de Los Milagros (Miracle Alley), which won the highest number of awards ever given to a single film in Mexican cinema history.
