Nicky Winmar is a former Australian rules footballer who made his mark playing for St Kilda, the Western Bulldogs, and South Fremantle in the Australian Football League (AFL) and the West Australian Football League.
Nicky Winmar Biography
He was born on September 25, 1965, in Pingelly, Western Australia. After playing 58 games with South Fremantle, Winmar was recruited by St Kilda in 1987, where he went on to win the Trevor Barker Award twice and was twice named in the All-Australian team.
He played for the Western Bulldogs for one season before retiring from the AFL in 1999. In recognition of his contributions to football, he was inducted into St Kilda’s hall of fame in 2003 and the West Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2009.
Winmar, who is of Indigenous Australian descent, was the first Aboriginal footballer to play 200 games in the AFL and was named in the Indigenous Team of the Century in 2005. Despite experiencing racial vilification during his career, Winmar’s legacy endures, with an iconic photograph of him responding to such an incident in 1993 being celebrated as one of Australian sport’s most memorable moments.
After retiring from the AFL, Winmar played for several clubs in regional and country leagues in Victoria and the Northern Territory, including Palmerston Football Club in the Northern Territory Football League, Warburton and Seville Football Clubs in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League and Rutherglen and Wodonga clubs in the Tallangatta & District Football League.
He had worked as a shearer and with Denfam, a Melbourne-based construction business, before working in the mining industry and living in Brookton, Western Australia, as of May 2012. In September 2012, Winmar had a heart attack while visiting Perth and was hospitalised at Royal Perth Hospital.
Winmar has been honoured for his contributions to Australian rules football, being named in St Kilda’s Team of the Century on a half-forward flank in 2003 and inducted into the club’s hall of fame. He was also named in the AFL’s Indigenous Team of the Century in 2005 and in South Fremantle’s Indigenous Team of the Century in 2009.
In the same year, he was inducted into the West Australian Football Hall of Fame. A tournament for underage indigenous footballers, the Nicky Winmar Cup, has been held since 2009 as a joint venture between the West Australian Football Commission and the Western Australian Department of Sport and Recreation, sponsored by Alinta, an energy company. Winmar’s cousins, Leroy Jetta and Nicholas Winmar, were formerly listed with AFL clubs Sydney and St Kilda, respectively.
However, Winmar has also had a troubled personal life. In 2000, he was convicted and fined for assaulting his ex-wife on Christmas Day of the previous year. In 2019, Winmar pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting a taxi driver in March of that year. On June 14, 2022, he was inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in recognition of his achievements on the field.
