There are already plans in place for the New York City Marathon’s 50th anniversary in 2021.
The number of participants has decreased as a result of the COVID-19. There will be 33,000 runners this year, according to the organizers.
In 2020, the New York City Marathon was scheduled to commemorate the city’s 50th anniversary with a big party, however it was canceled owing to COVID-19.

New York City Marathon champions Albert Korir of Kenya and Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya
On Sunday, the New York City Marathon returned to the streets for the first time since it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and turned into a virtual event.
There were a slew of additional health and safety safeguards implemented for this year’s race in an effort to keep the competition from becoming a “superspreader.”
With an unofficial timing of 2:22:39:39, Jepchirchir Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya won the women’s division. In the three months since her gold medal in the women’s marathon at the Olympic Games, the 28-year-old took the title in the race.
Kenyan Albert Korir, who finished the marathon in 2 hours, 8 minutes, and 22 seconds, won the men’s division of the competition. In 2019, Korir finished second.
Swiss wheelchair racer Marcel Hug claimed victory in the men’s division by clocking a timing of 1 hour, 31 minutes, and 24 seconds earlier in the day. Australia’s Madison de Rozario won the women’s race with a timing of 1 hour, 51 minutes and one second.
The 50th New York City Marathon will be held this year. There were 127 runners that signed up for the inaugural one in 1970, but only 55 crossed the finish line.
In 2019, 53,640 people completed the marathon, making it the largest in the world, officials said.
The number of participants plummeted to more than 30,000 this year, many of whom had been unable to participate in the event last year because of the epidemic, and enhanced public health standards still hung over the race.
Only those participants who had received at least one COVID-19 immunization or had tested negative for the virus in the previous 48 hours were allowed to compete. To avoid overcrowding, organizers added more starting waves. There were no restrictions on fuel and hydration belts this year, but volunteers and race officials were directed to hand finishers their trophies instead of placing them around their necks.
Still, spectators and competitors alike came to the streets of New York City’s five boroughs for the first time in two years to show their support for the 26.2-mile course.
