Phifer became Mekhi Phifer on December 29, 1974 in Harlem, New York City. He and his twin brother were raised as single parents by their mother, Rhoda Phifer, who worked as a high school teacher.
His mother was a strong influence in his life as she made sure her children stayed away from street gangs and other illegal activities that their peers were involved in at the time. At thirteen, Phifer began working odd jobs to meet his needs.
Phifer graduated from Lincoln Square Auxiliary Services High School in 1994. After high school, he was admitted to New York State University to study electrical engineering. He had been working on a rap album in the meantime when he and his cousin answered the open cast call for Spike Lee’s “Clockers”. Phifer has never had serious aspirations as an actor in the past.
