Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral was forced to leave Saturday’s Sugar Bowl due to an ankle injury to his right foot.
The injury occurred with 2:20 left to play in the first quarter of the game. After being sacked for the third time in the game, Baylor senior defensive tackle Cole Maxwell had to be helped off the field by a rolled right ankle.
Trainers from the Ole Miss football team attended to Corral on the field at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans for a few moments before assisting him off the field. Corral was unable to put any weight on his right foot as he made his way to the medical tent for treatment. He was only on the sidelines for a short period of time before being helped to an injury cart. He then walked away from the field and into the locker room.
Corral returned to the field in the second quarter, this time with crutches and without his shoulder pads on his shoulders.
Corral, a junior, was forced to leave the game after completing only two of six passes for ten yards and throwing an interception. In addition, he was credited with seven rushes for a total of 17 yards. He is widely regarded as a consensus first-round draft pick, including by Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News, who projects him to be the Carolina Panthers’ seventh overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Following the game, Corral was taken for X-rays, which, according to his coach, Lane Kiffin, revealed that he did not have any injuries.
Wrote Iyer of Corral:
“Corral is a dynamic athlete and confident runner who also shows aggressiveness with a big arm. He has quickly refined his raw skills under Lane Kiffin.”
Corral finishes his 2021 season having completed 260 of 384 passes (67.7 percent) for 3,343 yards and 20 touchdowns to five interceptions. He also had 152 rushes for 614 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns. It is unknown whether he bought an insurance policy against injury, though players can buy up to $10 million in coverage, depending on projected draft position.
