Gina Carano has been ‘cancelled’ on social media after a number of Instagram posts received backlash. She has since been fired by Lucasfilm from her role in The Mandalorian.
Mandalorian actress Gina Carano has caused a stir on social media yet again after she voiced her opinions on her Instagram Story. Twitter was instantly flooded with backlash over the controversial posts, and fans began to ‘cancel’ her.
Now, Lucasfilm have announced that they are dropping her from The Mandalorian franchise and have described the posts in a statement as “abhorrent and unacceptable”.
Gina Carano’s controversial Instagram posts explored
Gina Carano is being ‘cancelled’ online after she posted a series of controversial posts on social media.
In a now-deleted Instagram Story, she likened being a modern-day Republican to being Jewish during the Holocaust.
She shared a post that said:
“Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views.”
Gina also posted a photo of people wearing masks with the caption “meanwhile in California”, further reinforcing her anti-mask stance that has landed her in hot water on social media before.
She’s being ‘cancelled’ by fans
After she started receiving backlash, Gina deleted the two posts, but people had already taken screenshots and began sharing them on Twitter.
Fans instantly began ‘cancelling’ Gina, and the hashtag #FireGinaCarano even started trending as thousands of social media users began urging for her to be sacked following the controversial Instagram posts.
People even started tweeting Jon Favreau, Disney+, Star Wars and Lucasfilm urging them to take action.
This isn’t the first time The Mandalorian actress has been ‘cancelled’ either, as back in November 2020 she posted a series of anti-mask tweets that caused quite a stir.
Lucasfilm have fired Gina from The Mandalorian
It seems as though Lucasfilm, the production company behind The Mandalorian, listened to the calls on social media and took them very seriously, as they have now fired her from the show.
In a statement on Wednesday, a spokesperson for Lucasfilm said: “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future.”
They also described Gina’s social media posts as “abhorrent” and said: “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
However, a number of fans have disagreed with Disney’s decision to drop Gina, and the hashtag #CancelDisneyPlus is trending on Twitter in retaliation.
At the time of writing this, Gina Carano has not yet responded.
