John Barnes Watford
He was signed on 14 July 1981 for the fee of a set of kits, after a successful trial game in Watford’s reserves. Watford noticed him while playing for Middlesex League club Sudbury Court. Barnes made his debut at the age of 17 as a sub on 5 September 1981 in a 1–1 draw with Oldham Athletic in the Football League Second Division.
At the time Watford’s manager was Graham Taylor, and at that time Watford was eight months away from completing their five-year rise from the Fourth Division to the First. Watford finished as runners-up for the League title to Liverpool the following season. In the 1984 FA cup finals, Watford was beaten by Everton 2-0.
They reached the semi-finals in 1987, and they lost to Tottenham Hotspur. During that time speculation was mounting in newspapers and other sports magazines as to which big club would sign him.

He left Watford on 9 June 1987 in a £900,000 deal to join Liverpool after having made 233 League appearances for the Hornets and scoring 65 goals. He, at the same time, joined England teammate Peter Beardsley and linked up with new signings John Aldridge and Ray Houghton to form one of the most formidable attacking lines of Liverpool’s history.
On 15 August 1987, he made his debut for Liverpool along with other along with Beardsley, in the 2–1 league win over Arsenal at Highbury. On 12 September he made his first strike for Liverpool, as Liverpool beat Oxford United 2–0 at Anfield. In his first season, Liverpool remained undefeated for the first 29 games of the season and ending up with just two defeats. However, they were defeated by Wimbledon 1–0 in the FA Cup final.
In the mid-1990s, he knew he was reaching the veteran stage of his playing career. He left on a free transfer on 13 August 1997, after 10 years, 407 appearances, 108 goals, and seven major trophies.
