Why did Captain Tom Moore go to Barbados? Fans of the fundraising icon have rushed to defend his choice after news of Covid-19 hospitalisation.
Captain Sir Tom Moore earned his fame of sorts in the UK’s first lockdown, earning over £32 million for the NHS. The third lockdown however has seen him hospitalised with the virus himself.
Daughter Hannah updated followers on Twitter, writing: “I wanted to update everybody that today [Sunday, January 31st] my father was admitted to hospital. Over the last few weeks he was being treated for pneumonia and last week he tested positive for Covid-19.”
Celebrities have rushed to defend the trip
With Captain Tom’s diagnosis of Covid-19, many have drawn connections with his well-documented December Barbados trip, speculating they could be related.
However, others, including high-profile individuals have debunked a connection. This Morning discussed the online claims and disputed the timings. Matthew Wright in particular said.
“The timings don’t work out with this so it’s totally irrelevant anyway,” added Holly Willoughby.
Why did Captain Tom go to Barbados?
The Barbados trip in question took place on December 11th, when Barbados was a travel corridor for the UK, making it perfectly legal.
British Airways in fact had gifted the flights to Captain Tom, and shared it on Twitter: “We are honoured to be flying you and your family Captain Sir Tom, to one of our favourite destinations.”
A holiday to Barbados was on the bucket list of 100-year-old Captain Tom, according to his own tweets. “I never thought that, at the age of 100, I would get to travel again. I’m so grateful to everyone who has made this possible.”
“The support I have been shown in 2020 has given me renewed energy and today I get to tick something off my bucket list,” he added.
