Harrison Ford was born – John William Ford – in Chicago, Illinois on July 13, 1942. To the family of Christopher Ford and Dorothy Nidelman. His father Christopher, although an actor, began working as an advertising executive while his mother Dorothy worked as a radio actress. Growing up, Ford attended Maine Township High School in East, Park Ridge, Illinois. He was not a particularly bright student per se and had no athletic star or scored above average C.
However, he was an active member of the BoysScouts and rose to the rank of Life Scout. Wondering why he was cast as a Life Scout in the adventure film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade? While at school, Ford was the school’s first voice broadcaster for the new radio station WMTH. He was also the school’s first sports reporter during his senior year, 1959–1960, from which he graduated in 1960.
After high school HarrisonFord attended Ripon College in Wisconsin. He studied philosophy with Ripon and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He immersed himself in a short time and after an acting lesson in the last quarter of his senior year. He signed a Hollywood contract with Columbia and later Universal. His film roles in The Flat Iron (1967) and The Virginian (1962) lacked the impetus needed to encourage the young “guy”. Later, Ford turned to professional carpentry.
Ford wasn’t immediately successful when he started out as an actor. He even referred to himself as a “late bloomer” at one point. In 1964 he participated in a summer season in Wisconsin. He also took on uncredited film roles between 1966 and 1967. After a failed trial with the films, Ford resigned to defend Carpentary for his wife and two sons. But shortly thereafter he starred as Bob Falfa in American Graffiti (1973).
Just four years later, in 1977, Ford broke through with his role as Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode IV – A. Four more years later, he starred as Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Within four more years, he was earning Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for his role as John Book in Witness (1985).
