All of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and Messenger are down today, making it a bad day for the social media giants. And to top it all off, Facebook.com is now for sale, though we expect that to be resolved in the near future.
Updated at 6:52 p.m. Eastern Time on October 4th: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and the rest of the company’s services have all returned to service after an approximately 6-hour outage. Although Facebook hasn’t said what caused the outage, many suspect a faulty Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) update.
How Long Has It Been Since Facebook.com Went Down?
As of 11:40 a.m. ET, all of Facebook’s services – including Facebook Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus VR – were down.
WhatsApp, for its part, admitted to the problem on Twitter. It promised to “send an update here as soon as possible” once “things are back to normal.”
They had to go on a rival social network like Twitter to say that they were aware of some people having difficulty accessing their apps and products. In the meantime, please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience.
Facebook.com Is For Sale, However!
Attacks on and shutdowns of major websites are not new occurrences. It gets more intriguing, however, because according to Twitter user Chad Loder, someone has managed to delete the DNS A and AAA records for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. As a result, the domain names are now listed as available.
In addition, we used DomainTools to see if the domain was available. You can check it out for yourself right here.
You won’t be able to buy Facebook, as the DNS was probably just hijacked, and everything will be back to normal in a few minutes or hours at the most.
