African-American inventor Elijah McCoy made his name developing lubrication devices for trains in the late 1800s.
As a child, Elijah McCoy was raised by parents who had escaped slavery. During his teenage years in Scotland, McCoy studied engineering. Lacking employment opportunities in the United States for engineering professionals, he joined the train industry and used his experience to create an invention that improved railroad operations.
Mildred McCoy (née Goins) was the daughter of George and Mildred Goins McCoy. When the McCoys fled Kentucky for Canada via the Underground Railroad, they were known as the “McCoys.” It was at Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1847 that the extended family returned to the United States and settled.
What did Elijah McCoy Invent?
McCoy’s fascination with mechanics dates back to his early childhood. An apprenticeship in mechanical engineering in Scotland at the age of 15 had been organized by his parents. As soon as he received his mechanical engineering license, he headed back to his hometown in Michigan.
African-Americans were denied access to high-skilled professional occupations in the United States due to racial obstacles at the time, regardless of their education or training. To work for the Michigan Central Railroad, McCoy enlisted as a fireman and an oiler. This was where he made his first significant discoveries. The old oiling method for axles was found to be inefficient, so McCoy developed a lubricating cup to distribute oil uniformly throughout the engine’s moving elements. Using his design, trains could run nonstop for extended periods without stopping for maintenance, earning him a patent.
Since then, McCoy has received approximately 60 patents for his innovations. While he is best known for his lubrication system inventions, he also created ironing boards, sprinklers, and other machinery. McCoy’s contributions were lauded at the time, but his name does not appear on the majority of the products he designed.. [more] For lack of funds, he would often hand over his patent rights or sell them to investors so that they could produce vast quantities of his lubricants. Toward the conclusion of his life, McCoy founded the Elijah McCoy Manufacturing Company, which manufactured lubricators bearing his name.
Elijah McCoy Wife
It wasn’t until 1868, however, that McCoy and Ann Elizabeth Stewart became legally married. Their marriage lasted only four years before she died of natural causes. McCoy wed Mary Eleanor Delaney in 1873, and they had two children. When the McCoys’ car was involved in an accident in 1922, it was a tragic event. Mary was killed, and Elijah was seriously injured; he never recovered.
Elijah McCoy Cause Of Death
McCoy passed away on October 10th, 1929, at the Eloise Infirmary in Detroit, Michigan. He was 85 years old. To honor him, a graveside service was held at the Detroit Memorial Park East in Warren, Michigan on September 25, 2018.
