Anyone who has watched the computer-animated superhero comedy film Captain Underpants is probably unaware that Ed Helms is the voice behind the main character, Principal Benjamin Krupp, a cranky elementary school principal who is hypnotized by two fourth grade boys to believe he is Captain Underpants, who fights crime by wearing only underwear and a cape.

Ed Helms was born Edward Parker Helms on 24. January 1974 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. He is of Scottish/Northern Irish, German, Dutch and French descent. He is the last of three children, has a sister and a brother who is a geography teacher. His father was an insurance executive, a Navy veteran, a citizen, and an attorney who graduated from Harvard Law School.
His mother was a school principal and was known to be very conscious about health. Ed Helms referred to her as a “healthy nut” who was suspicious of sugar-coated foods, so they never had sugar cereal in the house. He once shared a story about his best friend visiting and discovering that he had unlimited access to Honey Nut Cheerios. Ed thought that was incredible and couldn’t tell how he consumed ten bowls of cereal that afternoon. The extent was an SOS call to his mother that sent her into a fit.
At the age of 14 and in his 7th grade, Ed underwent open heart surgery to correct a serious congenital defect. He has a 10 inch zip scar right next to his sternum to confirm the surgery.
As a child, his family attended the theater and enjoyed singing along. He grew up in an environment where his obsession with comedy and films made him feel like a maniac. As a youth, Ed Helms attended the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan . The King and I , Ashley Park, attended. He graduated from Westminster High School and was accepted into Oberlin College. There he studied geology and thought he would make a good Indiana Jones scientist. After college, Ed Helms moved from Ohio to seek greener pastures in New York. He began appearing at top standup comedy clubs, which earned him a loyal following. He also studied improvisation with the Upright Citizens Brigade Troops. During the same period, he worked as an assistant video editor at Crew Cuts, a post production facility based in New York. Eventually, Ed finished editing and began commercial voiceover work.
