Your identity is affected by your social situation. Imagine you’re in the fourth grade and you’re talking with a group of friends. You can walk around the group and ask yourself: “She is the smart one, he is the funny one, and she is the pretty one. What does that make me, then?” You start to figure out who you are based on what other people say about you.
One important thing to keep in mind is that we can change depending on the room we’re in. If you invite me to dinner with a group of people who are just starting out as entrepreneurs, they will look at me as a seasoned entrepreneur. If I go to a different dinner and Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg are there, I feel like a complete idiot who hasn’t done anything.
So, the people we hang out with can change us, and your identity can also change based on those people.
There’s nothing you can do to change that. You can’t just change the way the world works and stop comparing yourself to others. Instead, you have to realize that 1) your habits and actions shape your identity, giving you a way to tell yourself a better story; 2) as an adult, you get to choose who you hang out with; and 3) it doesn’t have to be a competition, it can also be a team effort. Don’t compare yourself to other people. Instead, try to find peers with whom you can connect, work, and rise together.
The more you can join groups where what you want to do is what everyone else does, the more it starts to feel like a powerful rising tide where you can succeed together instead of against each other.
You talk about how important it is to make the environment easier for good habits. As a result of the pandemic, many of us have been confined to our own homes. What are three things we can do right now to help us form better habits while we are physically limited?
I think that designing a space is very powerful. It’s the same idea I talked about before, which is that almost everything you think is a result of what you consume. It also applies to the way you act. Many of the things you do depend on where you are.
First, you can make sure that everything is as clear as possible. Most of the time, we act on what we see. So, if the snacks are on the kitchen counter, you’ll probably grab those. If they’re in the back corner of the pantry and there are apples on the counter, you’re more likely to grab the apple just because it’s there.
The second thing you can do is make the task harder by making it harder to move. You might find it easy to turn on the TV, so you spend a lot of time doing that. Well, if at the end of each day you unplug the TV, go upstairs, go to sleep, and wake up in the morning, all you have to do is plug the TV back in, but that’s probably enough friction to make you think, “Do I really want to do this, or should I be working right now?” By putting an extra step between you and the bad habit, you are less likely to slip into it and more likely to stick to the good thing. The point of friction is simple: take fewer steps between yourself and your good habits and more steps between yourself and your bad habits.
The third thing you can do to improve your environment is to try to find the version of a habit that gets you excited. Find something you want to do, and then use the first two tips to make it as simple as possible.
Let me give you an example. Many people think they should work out more because they want to get in shape. But you don’t have to train like a bodybuilder and lift weights if you don’t want to. There are many different ways to get fit. You can do things with your own bodyweight, go for a walk, run, or kayak. Find a way to do a habit that gets you excited, and then set up your environment to support it. You’ll be naturally motivated, and your environment will be helping you.
