Did Camila Cabello go to ‘racist rehab’? The singer will play Cinderella in the new 2021 film, but by the looks of Twitter, people are still unimpressed with her past.
Firstly, many may wonder what exactly ‘racist rehab’ is, as well as what Camila Cabello would need to attend a rehab centre for. So, let’s take a look at what the “Señorita” singer has been up to…
Why are people saying Camila Cabello was racist?
In 2019 Camila Cabello publicly apologized to her fans after racist Tweets emerged that were said to have come from her Tumblr account.
She took to social media to say: “When I was younger, I used language that I’m deeply ashamed of and will regret forever”
Now Camila is said to be using her platform for change by providing grants to 10 BIPOC, LGBTQ+and youth-led organizations. The aim is to provide activists with the support and tools they need to support other people.
Speaking to PEOPLE in 2021 she said: “You have to heal yourself before you can heal the community.”
CAMILA CABELLO AND RACIST REHAB
In terms of Camila attending ‘racist rehab’, the 24-year-old contacted a racial equity group, National Compadres Network, to “move forward and do better” following the content posted as a teen. She now attends weekly racial healing sessions.
According to The Independent: “screenshotted posts showed Cabello using the “n” word, while other posts showed the musician reblogging memes that played into racial stereotypes”. However, these Tweets have since been removed.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Camila said that the racial healing sessions “created a space where I was held accountable”.
CAMILA CABELLO: MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS
Camila Cabello looks to be one of few celebrities who chooses to be transparent when it comes to their personal growth.
While Perez Hilton posed the question: “Is this what one does to get uncanceled these days?”, suggesting that Camila’s latest move of taking racist rehab classes are to get “uncancelled”, she has previously spoken publicly about taking steps to improve herself in other ways.
In 2018, the Cuban-American singer and songwriter spoke publicly about dealing with OCD. She rose to fame with girl group Fifth Harmony which was formed when she was 15 years old.
While the 24-year-old is clearly keen to speak out on any issues, many people on Twitter don’t seem to be impressed by Camila’s now-deleted Tumblr posts. One person Tweeted: “Why would anyone have to LEARN not to be racist?”
Another said: “i’m black. there’s actual violently racist people out there but people waste their energy on dragging camila online for things she’s done years ago and apologized. what do y’all want her to do?? stop existing? can’t she learn and move on?”
