Full History of Nickelodeon
An educator and the director of research for PBS’s The Electric Company, Vivian Horner, came up with Nickelodeon’s concept. Pinwheel, Nickelodeon’s first original series, was created by her.
December 1, 1977 saw the debut of the Pinwheel show on Warner Cable Corp.’s innovative local cable television system QUBE in Columbus, OH. On C-3, one of the 10 “community” channels on QUBE, Pinwheel ran from 7am to 9pm EDT every day, and was only available on C-3. Following that, Horner turned Pinwheel into a full-fledged national television network.
On December 1, 1977, Pinwheel began transmitting educational content from throughout the world for 12 hours a day without advertisement. It was renamed Nickelodeon in 1979 and enlarged its original schedule, which included the sketch comedy show You Can’t Do That on TV.
The Canadian-produced show is credited for originating the channel’s characteristic and regular use of green slime when it first aired on a local Ottawa station.
The Rebranding of Nickelodeon
