Jonathan Capeheart Career
Capehart previously worked as a researcher for NBC’s The Today Show before joining The Washington Post and MSNBC. From 1993 to 2000, he was a member of the editorial board of the New York Daily News. Capehart was the newspaper’s youngest editorial board member at the time of his hiring. In 2000, he left the Daily News to work for Bloomberg News.
During Michael Bloomberg’s 2001 run for mayor of New York, Capehart advised and wrote speeches for him. He rejoined the New York Daily News in 2002 as deputy editor of the editorial page, where he remained until 2004. Capehart joined Hill & Knowlton as a Senior Vice President and Senior Counselor of Public Affairs in December 2004.
In 2007, Capehart became a journalist and member of The Washington Post’s editorial board. He still works in that capacity and contributes to MSNBC as a commentator. He also hosts the Cape Up podcast, in which he interviews politicians about race, religion, age, gender, and cultural identity.
In 2018, Capehart began appearing as a guest host on the WNYC radio show Midday on WNYC (formerly The Leonard Lopate Show). On December 13, 2020, he will host the premiere episode of The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart on MSNBC. Beginning in January 2021, Capehart will replace Mark Shields in the PBS NewsHour’s Friday political commentary segment.
