Billy Ray Turner, the alleged killer of the Lorenzen Wright murder case is finally proven guilty as per the verdict given by the trial in court.
The victim, was a well-liked Memphian and a Booker T Washington graduate who played basketball at Memphis State for two years before joining the NBA. He also had a brief career stint with the Memphis Grizzlies.
On July 18, 2010, Wright was last seen by his wife leaving with a pile of an undisclosed sum of money. The next day, a Germantown dispatcher answered a 911 call from the basketball player’s cell phone. 11 gunshots were heard by the dispatcher.
Memphis police discovered Wright’s rotting body in a field in southeast Memphis nine days later.
In 2017, Turner and Wright’s ex-wife, Sherra Wright-Robinson, were charged with the murder of Wright. Wright-Robinson pleaded guilty to first-degree murder facilitation in 2019 and is presently serving time in prison.
After less than three hours of deliberation, the jury reached a unanimous “guilty” verdict on all three counts — first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and attempted first-degree murder.
Billy Ray Turner Attorney Defence Claims Proven Invalid
Billy Ray Turner’s Attorney failed to defend him as innocent, as all claims were declared invalid. Even decades later in the case, the decisions were not reversed.
Investigators missed critical evidence that would have aided a faster investigation due to the time delay between the time Wright was killed and the time police discovered his horribly decomposed body.
For several years, the case was deemed closed until detectives discovered grounds to reconsider the participation of Wright’s ex-wife, Sherra Wright.
At the end of 2017, Sherra Wright was indicted at the same time as Turner. She is currently incarcerated for 30 years.

Prosecutors say Wright’s ex-wife Sherra Wright devised a plot to assassinate her ex-husband and enlisted the cooperation of Turner and his cousin Jimmie Martin.
Martin was accused of killing his girlfriend at the time of Wright’s murder, and he was convicted in that case as well. He got away with it in the Wright case.
Lorenzen Wright’s mother, Deborah Marion, was not surprised by the verdict.
She has claimed for the past 12 years that she knew her ex-daughter-in-law Sherra Wright was involved in her son’s murder. Even though there was no witness to place Billy Ray Turner at the site of Lorenzen Wright’s murder, the prosecution’s evidence was sufficient to aid the jury’s conclusion.
