Seven years ago, Disney Channel’s Descendants premiered on the network. Wothappen dives into the lives of the cast now and their whereabouts since the huge success of the trilogy.
The story of the teenage son of a king and queen of Auradon was a gripping tale. The children of the most popular and fearsome villains get the opportunity to attend a prestigious school in the kingdom.
Throughout its trilogy, the children are on a task to adjust their lives outside of the island. They’re also on a mission to rescue their parents from captivity.
Now, the Descendants became a huge success on Disney Channel, accumulating 6.6 million viewers with its three films and talented cast. However, they also faced tragedy within the crew as a beloved star died after filming of the movies.
Where the Descendants cast are now
Sofia Carson (Evie)
Now, before she joined the Descendants cast, the Colombian-American actress had already made moves in the filming industry. Her first television appearance was on Disney Channel, appearing as a guest star for the series Austin & Ally.
Not long after, she joined Descendants after being introduced as the daughter of the Evil Queen. Sofia then reprised her role in the subsequent films.
After Descendants, her fame ascended with a lot of projects lined up for the actress, as well as a singing career.
Carson was one of the actresses who took on the Pretty Little Liars legacy by joining its first spin-off called ‘Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists’ in 2019. However, the following year the series was canceled. Nonetheless, the 29-year-old actress starred in her debut Netflix movie as the main character of ‘Feel The Beat’.
Most recently, on July 29, 2022, Sofia’s latest work includes Netflix’s hit romantic-drama film ‘Purple Hearts’. Not only did she act in the role of Cassie, but she also was the executive producer and the writer of the movie’s soundtrack.
Dove Cameron (Mal)
Dove’s fame skyrocketed after appearing in the Descendants cast – and now she keeps rising and rising. However, the actress had already made a breakthrough with Disney Channel as the main character appearing in the popular series ‘Liv and Maddie’. The series surpassed the total of viewership from the then-leading series ‘Shake It Up!’ starring Zendaya and Bella Thorne.
In 2018, the actress debuted as a singer following the success of the soundtrack of Descendants. She announced the news when the third (and final) part of Descendants was released in the same year.
Since then, the actress has been focused on her singing career, as well as appearing on several projects in between. In 2020, Dove joined the animated special ‘Descendants: The Royal Wedding” to voice her character Mal.
2022 has been a very big year for the singer. She was in numerous released projects such as Machine Gun Kelly’s ‘Good Mourning’. She joined Becky G, Megan Fox, Avril Lavigne, Pete Davidson, and Snoop Dogg, amongst other celebrities. The 26-year-old actress also joined Ashton Kutcher for the dark-comedy film ‘Vengeance’.
Dove was cast for The Powerpuff Girls as the role of Bubbles. Her next movie ‘Field Notes on Love’ is also expected to be released next year.
Earlier this year, Dove released her song ‘Boyfriend’ which has seen international success as her first non-soundtrack song on the Billboard charts. In June, she dropped her second song ‘Breakfast’.
Cameron Boyce (Carlos)
Cameron had been active in the showbiz world for a decade. The world was heartbroken after the news of Cameron’s death. The actor passed away at the age of 20 while asleep after suffering complications from epilepsy. It came ahead of the premiere of his “last project”, the third sequel of Descendants in 2019.
At the time, his family said he passed in his sleep “due to a seizure which was a result of an ongoing medical condition for which he was being treated”.
In the following years, Cameron’s different projects were released posthumously. Wicked Woods: A Descendants Halloween Story and Mrs Fletcher were released the same year of his death.
In 2020, a documentary titled ‘Showbiz Kids’ was released in tribute to the late actor. His last film role was in the American thriller ‘Runt’ for the role of Cal.
In 2021, Amazon Prime announced the release of ‘Paradise City’, where Cameron’s character Simon Ostergaard appeared for eight episodes.
Booboo Stewart (Jay)
Besides knowing him as Jay, many people know Booboo for appearing in the saga of Twilight as Seth Clearwater – and if you didn’t know, there you go.
During and after his years in Disney Channel’s original movie, the actor appeared in numerous projects. Most notably, in X-Men and Twilight. Booboo’s fame took a new level after his role as Jay in the Descendants trilogy.
After Descendants ended, he starred in more than ten projects as part of the cast, now these include Pitching Tents, Descendants: Wicked World, Good People, Let Him Go, Paradise City, Guardians of Luna, and currently, Good Trouble.
Earlier this year, the 29-year-old actor celebrated the release of his first film as the main protagonist outside of Disney Channel, for ‘Those Who Walk Away’ and ‘My Dead Dad’.
China Anne McClain (Uma)
The actress has had a long career on Disney Channel, and appearing in Descendants was the cherry on top.
From 2018 to 2021, China has been interpreting the role of Jennifer Pierce, also known as Lightning, in the superhero series Black Lightning. Although she left the series and her role was recast with Laura Kariuki, the actress returned for the series finale.
The 23-years-old actress reprised her role as Uma in the special Descendants: The Royal Wedding.
Her music career also took off thanks to Disney Channel. She formed a band with her sisters Lauryn and Sierra called ‘McClain’.
China and her sister Lauryn started a YouTube account called Lauryn & China. The two would post all kinds of videos and challenges. The channel is now called “thriii” and has more than 706,000 subscribers. Her last video was an original song titled ‘My Sanity (a quarantine movie)’ in 2021.
Anna Cathcart (Dizzy)
If you didn’t know Anna as Dizzy from Descendants, you will surely know her from being Kitty on To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before.
Anna appeared in shows like Odd Squad, Under the Sea: A Descendants Story, Spring Breakway, Fast Layne, and Zoe Valentine. In 2019, Anna won her first award at the Canadian Screen Awards for Best Performance in a Children’s or Youth Program or Series in Odd Squad.
Though her fame started to take off in Descendants, the 19-year-old actress shot to fame after appearing in the Netflix film ‘All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’ alongside Noah Centineo and Lara Condor.
Her character as Katherine ‘Kitty’ Song-Covey will have her storyline in an upcoming Netflix series ‘XO, Kitty’. It will be a spinoff of TATBILB.
