Social media users are calling out an insensitive meme that has emerged on Twitter following the death of Prince Philip.
Buckingham Palace announced on Friday (April 9th) that the Queen’s husband Prince Philip has died aged 99.
In a statement, the palace revealed that His Royal Highness “passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle”.
Tributes to the Duke of Edinburgh are flooding social media as the nation enters a national period of mourning in the lead up to his funeral.
At the same time, a number of disrespectful memes have also been flooding social media following the Prince’s death, and Twitter users are calling them out.
What is the ‘Queen on Tinder’ Meme?
A disrespectful meme has emerged on Twitter that jokes that Queen Elizabeth is now on Tinder.
There are a number of different variations of the meme, but they are all a recreation of a Tinder dating profile with a photo of Queen Elizabeth, the name ‘Liz’ or ‘Lizzie’, her age and a bio.
It jokes that she has joined the dating app following the death of Prince Philip as she is now newly single.
Twitter users have branded it ‘insensitive’
Whilst many people continue to share the Queen Elizabeth on Tinder Meme on social media and brand it ‘hilarious’, others are calling it out for being insensitive.
People have taken to Twitter to slam the meme for mocking the recent death of Prince Philip and have argued that we shouldn’t be joking about such a sensitive topic.
One person wrote on Twitter: “I have had people send me very inappropriate memes about the Queen on Tinder. Very very disrespectful in my opinion.”
“Just seen a meme showing the queen’s newly single tinder profile. Some people are real a***holes aren’t they,” said another.
A third person wrote: “This is lowest of the low, just when you think people’s morality can’t get any lower, they exceed all expectations!!”
“Fed up of seeing horrible jokes about Philip’s death and the queen jumping on tinder! She’s lost her life partner of 73 years! Have some respect. I can’t imagine losing the love of your life after that long of being together,” another person tweeted.
Disresepctful Prince Philip Memes are flooding Twitter
The ‘Queen on Tinder’ meme isn’t the only meme that’s taking over Twitter following Prince Philip’s death.
In fact, social media is being flooded with memes related to the Duke of Edinburgh and his death, and people are slamming those too.
One person wrote: “The amount of mocking memes & horrible comments people have made over Prince Philip’s death makes you realise how disgusting & disrespectful some people are. Fair enough if you don’t like the monarchy but expressing it by making fun of the dead is quite frankly not funny.”
“There’s a time for funny memes then there’s just being outright disrespectful. Whether you’re a monarchy person or not, whether you like the royals or not, you don’t go blabbing insults and hurrars at someone’s death. Have some Godamn respect. #PrincePhilip RIP,” said another.
Another tweeted: “Can’t believe I’m already seeing memes about Prince Philip passing. Whether you like him or the monarchy or not it’s just plain disrespectful.’
