Tick Tick Boom! will be familiar to Broadway superfans, but the autobiographical musical about writing a show that no one ever saw could be perplexing to those who come as fans of Andrew Garfield or in search of a new Netflix movie to pass the time. To recap, Tick, Tick… Boom! is Lin-Manuel Miranda’s film adaptation of Rent creator Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical monologue of the same name, which tells the story of Larson’s struggle to write his musical Superbia while struggling as an artist. To cut a long story short, Superbia was never a hit, but Larson’s Tick, Tick… Boom! became the warm-up act for his upcoming hit musical Rent, which he wrote about his Bohemian struggles in early 1990s New York.

Of course, a true love for musical theater is required to make this film, which has a confusing narrative and a convoluted background. Lin-Manuel Miranda, Broadway’s golden child, is a true musical theater aficionado. In order to bring Larson’s story to life, Miranda enlists the support of his friends, partners, and personal heroes throughout the film. Here’s a rundown of every Broadway cameo in the movie, in order of appearance, with a special focus on the cameo-packed writers’ workshop and “Sunday” sections. (Cameos are sorted from top row to bottom row, left to right, in photographs with several persons.)

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s father, Luis Miranda, Jr., serves as the concierge. He’s appeared in a handful of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s films before.

The Workshop for Writers

Jonathan attends a writing workshop, and the first significant spate of appearances appears during that sequence. A distinguished panel of real-life Broadway writers and composers sits in the workshop audience.

Marc Shaiman

Marc Shaiman is an award-winning composer and songwriter who is most known for his collaborations with filmmaker Scott Wittman. Shaiman is best known for composing and co-writing the lyrics for the blockbuster hit musical Hairspray, based on the 1988 John Waters film. The Broadway musical adaption was later translated into a 2007 musical film starring Queen Latifah, Zac Efron, and John Travolta, among others. Shaiman’s work on film and television scores has earned him seven Oscar nominations, putting him one trophy shy of an EGOT.

Grace McLean

Grace McLean is an actress, dramatist, and composer best known for her appearances in Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812, as well as Alice by Heart.

Eli Bolin

Many of your favorite comic musical moments on television are composed and lyricized by Eli Bolin. He co-wrote the songs for John Mulaney’s special John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch and wrote the songs for the (arguably best) episode of Documentary Now!, “Original Cast Album: Co-op.” Bolin has also written for shows like Sesame Street and Billy on the Street, both of which are based on real-life events.

Chad Beguelin

Chad Beguelin is a six-time Tony Award-winning playwright and lyricist best known for his collaboration with Matthew Sklar on the musical The Prom, which you may remember from its recent Hollywood film adaption starring Meryl Streep, James Corden, and Nicole Kidman. He also contributed to the stage version of Disney’s Aladdin, writing the book and extra lyrics. Two other Broadway adaptations of your family’s favorite movies, The Wedding Singer and Elf, are among his other renowned works.

Matthew Sklar

Beguelin’s literary mind is matched with Matthew Sklar’s musical mind. He is well known for writing the music for The Prom, Elf, and The Wedding Singer, among other productions.

Alex Lacamoire

Alex Lacamoire is the composer, arranger, conductor, and musical director behind a large portion of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s work, including In the Heights, Fosse/Verdon, and, of course, Hamilton. He’s also worked on Dear Evan Hansen and The Greatest Showman, for which he received an Emmy nomination.

Georgia Stitt

Georgia Stitt is a composer, lyricist, and music director best known for her collaborations with her husband, Jason Robert Brown, including music directing/supervising for the film versions of The Last Five Years and 13. Stitt has also directed and conducted musicals such as Sweet Charity and Little Shop of Horrors.

Jeanine Tesori

Jeanine Tesori is the most well-known and prolific female composer in the history of the theater. She has been nominated for a Tony Award five times and has twice been a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Fun Home, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Shrek The Musical, Violet, and Caroline, or Change are just a few of the classics for which she composed the music. She composed the music for The Little Mermaid 3, Shrek the Third, The Emperor’s New Groove 2, and Mulan 2.

Stephen Schwartz

One of the most well-known members of the group is Schwartz. He’s a lyricist and composer who’s worked on some of the most well-known musicals of all time, including Godspell, Pippin, and Wicked. Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Prince of Egypt are among his many animated films for which he has written the songs. He also wrote the music and lyrics for a short film called Enchanted (which is getting its own sequel in 2022).

Jason Robert Brown

Jason Robert Brown is a playwright, composer, and lyricist best known for his autobiographical musicals The Last Five Years and 13, both of which were made into films (the 13 adaptation is currently in production at Netflix). Ariana Grande and her Victorious co-star Elizabeth Gillies both make their professional acting debuts in 13 as well. Other prominent shows for which Brown has composed music include The Bridges of Madison County and The Bridges of Madison County.

Shaina Taub

Old Hats, Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, and Hadestown are among the Off-Broadway productions in which Shaina Taub has appeared.

Tom Kitt

Tom Kitt is a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, conductor, and orchestrator best recognized for his work on the successful musical Next to Normal. He’s also worked on famous recent works like If/Then, Jagged Little Pill’s orchestral arrangement, and, most importantly, the orchestrations for SpongeBob SquarePants’ great musical adaption. Kitt worked on the music for the Broadway adaption of Bring It On alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Amanda Green

Amanda Green is a singer-songwriter and actress who has worked with Kitt on numerous occasions, most notably co-writing the lyrics for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical adaption of Bring It On. She also authored the lyrics for the Broadway rendition of High Fidelity, which were written to accompany Kitt’s tune.

Jaime Lozano

Jaime Lozano, a Mexican native, is a newbie to Broadway’s main stage. Lozano’s work includes highly praised Off-Broadway original works including The Yellow Brick Road, Children of Salt, Lightning Strikes Twice, and others, and he has been dubbed the “next big thing” by Miranda.

Stephen Trask is a musician and composer who is most known for writing the music and lyrics for the film Hedwig and the Angry Inch, in which Darren Criss, Taye Diggs, and Neil Patrick Harris star as the title character. Trask has also composed music for a number of your favorite films, ranging from renowned indies like Camp to star vehicles like Dreamgirls.

Iconis, Joe

Joe Iconis is a composer, songwriter, and playwright best known for his work on the musical Be More Chill, for which he wrote the music and lyrics.

Steven Levenson is a writer and director.

Steven Levenson is a playwright and television writer best known for creating Dear Evan Hansen’s Tony-winning book. Miranda works with Levenson frequently—he developed the screenplay for TTB and was the showrunner for the critically acclaimed FX limited series Fosse/Verdon (which Miranda produced).

Hudes Quiara Alegra

Quiara Alegra Hudes is an essayist, playwright, and lyricist. In 2012, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her play Water by the Spoonful. Hudes is also noted for her collaborations with Miranda, including penning the novel for In the Heights and directing the film adaptation.

“Sunday” in the Diner With Jon

The next horde of Broadway greats appears in the musical number “Sunday,” which is already an ode to Stephen Sondheim and his musical Sunday in the Park with George. The number reimagines the Act I closer of Sondheim’s musical in the voice of a daydreaming Larson, who is complaining about working at a packed diner during the Sunday brunch rush. In the film, the number serves as an ode to the legends of Broadway.

Howard McGillin.

McGillin is most remembered for his ten-year tenure as the Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. McGillin also appeared in a number of other significant Broadway musicals, including the 1987 revival of Anything Goes with Patti LuPone.
