That the UEFA Champions League is one of the most coveted trophies in world football is never in doubt. The pride and reward that come with winning it is matched by very few in the globe. The clubs that have won the title have for long spells been at the top of European and world football as the rewards from it mean better financial standing.
However, not all the big players in world football have managed to get their hands on this coveted trophy. Some of the greatest players to grace the European football stage and not win the title are still active but in the advanced stages of their careers and may just follow some of their high-ranking mates never too have won this title.
Sometimes it is not just the players, but even the big teams with some of the biggest budgets in Europe. Teams like Manchester City, PSG and Atletico Madrid may have high ratings on sports predictions on Wincomparator but for all their contribution to football, they are yet to win the Champions League title, though theyve each been to the final.
Here we take a look at some of the top players yet to win the Champions League title.
Jan Oblak: The Slovenia captain joined Atletico Madrid in 2014 and went on to make a name for himself. He has over 100 clean sheets and is definitely one of the biggest keepers to ever grace European football. Three times he has made it to the Champions League team of the season, but the closest he has come to winning the trophy was in 2016, when Atletico lost to Real Madrid in the final.
Kevin de Bruyne: The Belgian international was unlucky to leave the pitch injured and in tears last season as Manchester City fell short in the Champions League final against Chelsea. A key man for City since his arrival in 2015, De Bruyne has risen to be one of the best assist providers around, but while he has won all at domestic club level, it is a Champions League medal that misses in his glittering career.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic: The Swede superstar is now 40 and his team, AC Milan is out of the UEFA Champions League. He is injury prone and it may just be dawning on us that one of the biggest players to ever grace the game, may never win the most coveted club title. His has been a case of leaving at the wrong time. In Europe, Ibra has turned out for some of the biggest teams; Ajax, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Manchester United, Barcelona and PSG. In that list, only PSG havent won the Champions League and when the rest won it, Ibra wasnt there.
Sergio Aguero: Heres a player with one of the saddest stories in football. At his prime, Aguero was slowed down by injury, and even when Argentinas golden generation finally managed to win the Copa America, he was absent. Aguero battled injury for the better part of last season and when he thought the time had come for him to add the Champions League to his medals, Manchester City fell to Chelsea and a forlorn figure of Argentine was the highlight after the final whistle. A move to Barcelona later would crash after just a few months as he was forced to retire from the game.
