Pau Torres Biography
Born on January 16, 1997, he currently plays as a centre-back for the renowned La Liga club Villarreal, as well as representing the Spain national team.
Born in Villarreal, located in the Province of Castellón within the Valencian Community, Torres began his football journey in the youth ranks of his hometown club. He made his debut in the league for Villarreal’s reserve team on August 21, 2016, starting in a 1-0 away loss against Cornellà in the Segunda División B.
Torres marked his first senior goal on October 8, 2016, contributing to a 2-2 home draw against Badalona. Later that season, on December 20, he made his competitive appearance for Villarreal’s first team, coming on as a late substitute for Víctor Ruiz in a 1-1 home draw against Toledo in the Copa del Rey round of 32. This significant moment made him the first player born in Villarreal to debut for the club in 13 years.
His La Liga debut came on November 26, 2017, as he replaced fellow youth graduate Manu Trigueros late in a 2-3 home defeat against Sevilla. Shortly thereafter, Torres made his UEFA Europa League debut, starting and completing the full 90 minutes in a 0-1 group stage loss to Maccabi Tel Aviv at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
In August 2018, Torres embarked on a one-year loan to Málaga. During his time there, he showcased his talent by missing only four Segunda División games and contributing to the team’s qualification for the promotion play-offs. As a result, he was subsequently recalled by Villarreal.
Since his return, Torres has solidified his place in Villarreal’s starting lineup, demonstrating his consistency and skill by playing every minute in the league. In October 2019, his exceptional performances were rewarded with a contract extension until 2024. That same month, he scored his first goal in the Spanish top tier, opening the scoring in a 2-1 defeat against Osasuna.
Pau Torres received his first call-up to the Spain national team by Robert Moreno on October 4, 2019, for the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers against Norway and Sweden. Although he did not make his debut until November 15, he made an immediate impact by scoring a goal in a resounding 7-0 victory over Malta. Notably, this match also saw Dani Olmo score on his debut, marking the first time in 30 years that two Spaniards accomplished this feat in the same game.
Following his impressive performances, Torres was selected by coach Luis Enrique to be part of the 24-man squad for the UEFA Euro 2020 finals. Additionally, he was chosen to represent the Spanish Olympic team, which went on to win a silver medal at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Pau Francisco Torres continues to make his mark in the world of football with his remarkable defensive skills and contributions to both club and country.
