Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts de-wigs mid-sermon, prompting powerful response
During what was set to be a standard Sunday sermon, pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts used wigs to make a powerful point to the audience, in a moment that has since gone viral.
Sarah Jakes Roberts is a pastor personality and public speaker, who is known for touring the country leading sermons and talks for arena-sized crowds.
The author and social media star keeps her personal life out in the open and has revealed publically that she wears wigs as they allow for versatility and help her to keep her hair healthy. Though no one could have predicted that wigs would become a focal point in one of her sermons, in a moment that has now gone viral.
Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts de-wigs during speech
Unlike a typical, local preacher, Roberts has access to a platform of over 2.4 million followers, and that’s just on Instagram alone. So when the Woman Evolve founder talks, the internet listens.
And during a sermon given this past weekend on May 28, Roberts made the best of an annoying wardrobe malfunction and turned it into a learning moment for the audience, both in person and at home.
When the celebrity pastor began to feel her wig slipping mid-address, rather than pausing to adjust it, Roberts simply offed the hair piece and continued to lead the sermon wigless.
I’ve always enjoyed getting dressed up and looking my best. I also have worked really hard to separate my worth and identity from my appearance. I can be full glam one day and fresh hyperpigmented face the next. Today I was preaching and I could feel my wig slipping. My message was more important to me than maintaining my appearance so I took it off, locked in, and kept preaching. What moved me the most was seeing how many women joined me in getting courageously vulnerable, real, and free. Literally, wigs coming off everywhere. I can’t even imagine what God is going to do in September when we gather for Woman Evolve. The message will be up soon and I’m sure the video will circulate a bit but the wigs, beat face, clothes, and shoes are just another way of showing that you can love Jesus and still be fly, but if I didn’t have any of it and still was chosen to preach the gospel, I would. And I did. And I am. As long as you get the message and God gets the glory, my job is done.♬ original sound – Sarah Jakes Roberts

Addressing the moment shortly after online, Roberts told her army of followers “I’ve always enjoyed getting dressed up and looking my best”, but stressed that in that moment, “My message was more important to me than maintaining my appearance so I took it off, locked in, and kept preaching.”
“The message will be up soon and I’m sure the video will circulate a bit but the wigs, beat face, clothes, and shoes are just another way of showing that you can love Jesus and still be fly,” Roberts continued, adding: “but if I didn’t have any of it and still was chosen to preach the gospel, I would.”
Roberts’ wig moment prompts moving crowd response
Seemingly inspired by what they were witnessing, many members of the audience in attendance at Roberts’ sermon reportedly began to follow the pastor’s lead.
“What moved me the most was seeing how many women joined me in getting courageously vulnerable, real, and free”, said Richards, describing the moment.
“Literally, wigs coming off everywhere. I can’t even imagine what God is going to do in September when we gather for Woman Evolve.”
In less than 24 hours the short video has racked up just shy of a quarter of a million likes on Instagram, and has been viewed over half a million times over on TikTok.
Judging by the comments, it would appear the wig moment has resonated with viewers online just as strongly as it did with the church-going attendees.
“It’s one thing to be honest; another thing to be transparent”, commented one inspired viewer on TikTok. “But it’s a whole nother level to be vulnerable. Bless you sis. Go God. #Fearless”.
“When I saw you do it, I went IN!!!! I’m talking about tears flowing like a river!” wrote another gracious commenter on Instagram. “Even in the pureness of this moment, the haters gone hate, but there is NO denying your anointing! To God be the glory!”
Roberts is but one example of the various modern-day preachers who have successfully used their standing in the religious community to grow a large online following, thus subsequently allowing them to broadcast their teachings to a wider, international audience.
Between Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok combined, Roberts has a combined following of over 5.4 million people.
