Keiko Fujimoto, and His Personal Life

Balwani was married to Keiko Fujimoto, a Japanese artist, and the couple lived in San Francisco until their divorce in 2002. Balwani had a romantic relationship with Elizabeth Holmes while working at Theranos. They met in 2002 when Holmes was 18 years old and still in high school.

He was married and 19 years older than Holmes at the time. Theranos investors were not made aware of their relationship. Holmes claimed during her trial that she was raped as a Stanford student and that, after the incident, she sought help from Balwani.

Keiko Fujimoto Career

In the 1990s, Balwani worked at Microsoft and Lotus Software. While working at Microsoft, Balwani was in charge of sales. Independent investigations were unable to validate his claims of writing tens of thousands of lines of code, and other Microsoft executives who were questioned about him were unable to identify him. While working at Microsoft, he fell in love with Japanese artist Keiko Fujimoto, and they married.

He joined CommerceBid.com as President in late 1999. It was a software development company that assisted businesses in making purchases and sales via online auctions on the then-new Internet. In 1999, Commerce One, another highly respected business development software firm, purchased the company. The whole transaction was covered by shares, and Balwani joined the new company’s board of directors. Balwani received around $40 million from the sale of his Commerce One stock in July 2000, shortly before the dot-com bubble broke and the firm went bankrupt.

He later went to school and earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley in 2003. He stayed at Stanford University’s PhD program in computer science for four more years until leaving in 2008. Balwani, then 37 and a student at Berkeley, met Elizabeth Holmes, then 18 and a senior in high school, while they were both students.

Holmes attended Stanford University and earned an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering before leaving to focus solely on Theranos.

Career as Theranos’ Chief Operating Officer

Balwani was appointed president of Theranos in 2009. He was in charge of day-to-day operations, but owing to Balwani’s activities and a lack of medical specialists on the company’s board of directors, his lack of experience in biological sciences and medical equipment became an issue. Former Theranos employees described him as demanding, inflexible, and borderline psychotic in his fear of industrial espionage.

Balwani was well-known at Theranos for using technical language that looked to be beyond his grasp in order to appear more knowledgeable. The Wall Street Journal released an article in October 2015 suggesting that Theranos’ Edison blood testing technology provided incorrect medical diagnoses and findings.

The federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services acknowledged in a March 2016 study that Edison devices consistently failed quality-control testing and produced wildly variable results.

Following a visit to Theranos’ facility in Newark, California, the CMS issued a warning letter to the business in January 2016. After the company failed to remedy concerns with its California facility in March 2016, CMS authorities advised a two-year suspension of Balwani’s eligibility to own or operate a blood lab. Theranos is also accused of fraudulently claiming that its technology was being utilized in battle by the United States Department of Defense when it has never been deployed. Another exaggeration was the claim that a $100,000 income stream in 2014 was worth $100 million. Balwani resigned from Theranos in May 2016.
