Schmadtke began his position as sporting director at Aachen in December 2001. The team had a four million euro deficit and was in risk of losing its license.
He was successful in strengthening the team and scouting. Alemannia Aachen advanced to the German Cup final in the 2004–05 season.
The squad was promoted to the top flight for the ensuing season. The club enjoyed financial success. He announced in October 2008 that he would not be renewing his contract, which was valid until 2009, and was fired the next day.
