John McAfee was a British-American computer programmer and businessman known world wide for his McAfee Anti virus computer software. He is also a two-time presidential candidate who unsuccessfully sought the Libertarian Party nomination for president of the United States in 2016 and in 2020.

Who was John McAfee?
John David McAfee was born on September 18, 1945 in Cinderford, United Kingdom to an American father, Don McAfee and and English mother, Joan. Although born in the United Kingdom, he was raised in Salem, Virginia, United States. He has always held that he is much of an English just like an American. His father was an alleged alcoholic who shot himself when McAfee was 15 years old. McAfee graduated with a degree in mathematics in 1967 from Roanoke College. While on course for a doctorate in Mathematics at the Northeast Louisiana State College, he got entangled with an undergraduate student and he was expelled. He later married that student whose name is unknown.

Between 1968 and 1970, McAfee worked as a programmer for Institute for Space Studies in New York on the Apollo program. He moved on to Univac from there and worked as a software designer. Xerox took him as an operating system architect. In 1978, he joined Computer Sciences Corporation as a software consultant. While working with Lockheed in 1986, he was terrified about a computer program virus after reading about it and decided to create an anti virus program to detect and erase virus automatically, there came McAfee Associates Inc.

Initially McAfee did not seek a large userbase of paying users, but rather wanted to raise awareness of the need to be protected from computer viruses. However, by making people fear such malware, he managed to generate millions of sales, and by 1990 he was making five million dollars a year. The company was incorporated in Delaware in 1992, and had its initial public offering the same year. In August 1993, McAfee stepped down as chief executive and remained with the company as the chief technical officer. He was succeeded by Bill Larson. In 1994 he sold his remaining stake in the company. He had no further involvement in its operations.

McAfee was also a staunch politician and a libertarian. He was an advocate of the decriminalization of cannabis, an end to the war on drugs, non-interventionism in foreign policy, a free market economy which does not redistribute wealth, and upholding free trade. He supported abolishing the Transportation Security Administration. Twice he campaigned to president of the United States and failed in both his quests. McAfee’s death news hit the internet and the cause of his death was suicide. He died on June 23, 2021 at age 75 at Sant Esteve Sesrovires, Catalonia, Spain. McAfee had nothing before his death. He sold his assets on the cheap and what he had left was seized upon his arrest.
