Joey King – who turns 23 today (July 30, 2022) – is known for her role on The Kissing Booth, but she’s appeared in several movies where she’s been unrecognizable due to her shaved head.
Actors are paid astounding amounts not only because of their on-screen talents, but also for their months of preparation. Some celebrities train new skills for months, or in Lady Gaga’s case, live daily life with a strong Italian accent for nearly an entire year.
Another huge commitment is to shave your head completely, and that’s exactly what Joey King did not once, not twice, but three times. At this point, it sounds like the actress has had no hair more than a full head in her 16-year Hollywood career.

Joey King got rid of her long locks for the sake of acting
The head-shaving began in 2012
Joey established herself as a talented actress starting with a background role in a 2006 episode of Malcolm In The Middle. Six years later, aged 12, King appeared as a young Talia al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises, alongside Christian Bale.

Talking to Allure in July 2022, the actress revealed she’s never regretted shaving off her locks despite the negativity, and even recommends women try it at least once.
“I would absolutely do it again, I’ve never felt more free or more in tune with my beauty. I couldn’t hide behind my hair,” she explained. “A lot of people made fun of me when I had my head shaved. A lot of people said really mean things. But when I had short hair, I actually felt more confident; I felt very powerful.”
2014: Wish I Was Here
Round two came two years later for comedy drama Wish I Was Here. Portraying Grace Bloom, her character shaves her head for attention and sports a vibrant pink wig for the rest of the film. The unexpected head-shave resulted in heavy tears from her and her on-screen mother, who wept over the loss of her “beautiful hair”.
If anything, it was the wig that made a statement, not her lack of hair.
2019: The Act
Joey starred as Gypsy Rose Blanchard in Hulu true-crime series The Act, based on the events between Blanchard and her mother, Dee Dee, who passed away in 2015.
In the show, Gypsy Rose is wheelchair-bound due to multiple fake illnesses, which Dee Dee orchestrated. By the end, she is killed by Rose’s boyfriend.
Blanchard told Bustle via email that legal action would be taken against the show’s creators for using her name and story allegedly without her consent. Further developments of the case, if any, remain unknown to the public.
As for Joey, her dedication to the role, which included training her voice into a squeaky, child-like tone without professional guidance, paid off. It earned her nominations for an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a SAG Award that year.
At this rate, her next transformation will be a winner.
