Presbyterian Church in 1941.
McGee became the pastor of the Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles in 1949. That same year, he gave one of the daily invocations at Billy Graham’s two-month-long Christ for Greater Los Angeles Campaign. In 1955, McGee had a well-publicized break with the Presbyterian Church, in which he claimed the church’s “liberal leadership had taken over the machinery of the presbytery with boldness and ruthlessness that is appalling.
“This Fundamentalist–Modernist controversy within the Presbyterian church had been growing since the 1920s. After retiring from the pastorate at the Church of the Open Door in 1970, he devoted his remaining years to the Thru the Bible Radio Network. J Vernon Mcgee Sermon | Thru The Bible Sunday Sermon
The Sunday Sermon program airs a collection of Dr. McGee’s most effective and fruitful messages that he delivered during his 21-year pastorate at the historic Church of the Open Door, formerly located in downtown Los Angeles. So, grab your Bible and follow the links—we’ve got a seat saved for you down in front.
McGee was an active participant in this radio ministry for 47 exciting years. When his health began to fail, plans were made in advance to decide how the Bible study program would continue in the event of his homegoing. The message would remain the same and the “voice” of Thru the Bible Radio would continue to be Dr. McGee, through the use of the taped 5-year program.
After our Savior called Dr. McGee home in December of 1988, the program’s reach continued to grow. Today, Thru the Bible is a worldwide ministry airing on over 800 stations in the U.S. and Canada and heard in more than 100 languages and dialects around the world. Our mission is simple and the same one Dr. McGee himself embraced: To take the whole Word to the whole world.
The continued success of this ministry, even after the death of its founder, gives testimony to God’s abundant blessings. The work is supported entirely by the fervent prayers and faithful giving of our wonderful listeners, and we plan to keep sending the Word out as long as God allows.
Our theme verse is Revelation 3:8–”I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.” We pray now more than ever that God will continue to guide us through those open doors until the Lord Jesus comes!
“One day I switched on my radio and, all of a sudden, I heard your program. It moved my heart to believe that God exists….” (from a Hindi listener in India)
God has not put most of us in an exotic, faraway place. Perhaps, like Moses, you don’t even feel able to speak about the Bible within your own familiar surroundings. Radio and Internet broadcasting can give you a voice as you tell others about Thru the Bible.
It can leap across the sea, over high mountains, into the midst of troubled nations. It can go into the quiet of a house church in China or into the most remote areas of Africa and India where whole villages listen together. We have the privilege of being missionaries together–using the powerful tools of radio and the Internet.

J. Vernon McGee Quotes
“If you lack wisdom in regard to a problem, you need to go to God in prayer.”
“What is in the well of the heart will come up through the bucket of the mouth.”
“Immorality is just as bad now as it was in the past. The difference is that now we flaunt it. It used to be done in secret, but now it is done in the open.
“There is a brotherhood within the body of believers, and the Lord Jesus Christ is the common denominator. Friendship and fellowship are the legal tenders among believers.”
“When I hear Christians say, “I don’t do this, and I don’t do that, and I am following a set of rules,” I immediately recognize that they know very little about the grace of God. They are trying to live the Christian life in their own strength. But Paul says, “Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.”
“When a man and a woman give themselves to each other in an act of marital love, they can know the love of Christ as no one else can know it.”
“You can believe a whole lot of foolish things, but God doesn’t want you to do that. He wants your faith to rest upon the Word of God.”
“If there is no deep yearning for a life that is well-pleasing to Him, if there is no stimulating desire to know Him and His Word, church membership is just like a young man falling in love with a furnished apartment and marrying an electric stove, a refrigerator, a vacuum cleaner, a garbage disposal, and a wet mop! That is just about all it amounts to. Let’s stop playing church today and start loving Christ and living for Him!”
“The greatest sin today in the church is the man in the pew who is ignorant of the Bible.”
“Today, when people say they cannot believe, it is not a mental problem; it is a matter of the will of the heart- they do not want to believe. Some say they have certain ‘mental reservations,’ mental hurdles which they cannot get over. My friend, your mind is not big enough to take even one little hurdle. The problem is never in the mind but in the will. There is sin in the life, and a man does not want to turn to God; he does not want to believe Him.”
“Someday, when in the presence of our Savior, we will thank Him for every burden, every trial, and every heartache.”
Any place you can take Jesus Christ with you is ok to go.”
