Is Carrie Symonds Catholic?
Yes, Carrie Symonds is a practising Catholic. She had her son, Wilfred, christened into the Catholic Church when he was four months old on September 12th, 2020.
Wilfred’s baptism was held at Westminster Cathedral – the same location Boris and Carrie chose for their wedding.
Boris Johnson is also a Catholic. He was christened as a baby and his mother, Charlotte Fawcett, is also Catholic.
Did Carrie Symonds and Boris Johnson have a Catholic wedding ceremony?
Because Boris Johnson, 56, had been married twice before tying the knot with Carrie, some Catholics have asked how it is possible that the Prime Minister could get married in a Catholic Church.
Boris married Allegra Mostyn-Owen in 1987 and the couple stayed together until 1993. He later married Marina Wheeler in 1993 and the couple went their separate ways in 2020.
Catholic Canon Law states that someone who’s divorced cannot remarry again in the Church if their former spouse is still alive.
However, because Boris’ previous weddings weren’t Catholic, and neither were his wives, it means that under Catholic law, the weddings aren’t technically recognised.
This meant that Carrie and Boris could get married in a Catholic Church without a hitch. The Prime Minister’s father, Stanley and the couple’s son, Wilfred, were some of the select guest invited.
