He was seen as the helicopter pilot on Magnum, P.I.
Roger was cast alongside Tom Selleck for eight seasons of Magnum, P.I.
He was shown to be a pal of Tom’s character Thomas Magnum, who he knew from their days in the Vietnam war. He owned a helicopter charter company called Island Hoppers.
The actor revealed in an interview with Jim Conlan that when he was offered the role on Magnum, P.I. he was busy making movies and wasn’t looking for a job in television.
The actor recounted his agent telling him: “It’s starring this guy Tom Selleck. Tom Selleck has made about five pilot shows and none of them has sold. So here’s what you do, Roger. Sign up for the show, go over to Hawaii, they’ll treat you good for the 20 days it will take to shoot the pilot, you’ll get a lot of money, and then you come home. A show with Tom Selleck always fails, and you’ll be fine.’”
Apparently, the actor could fly in real life as he was a licensed private helicopter pilot, but he wasn’t allowed to fly on the show.

My heart is heavy but I am strong. I will care for mommy, your love of almost 60 years. You raised me well and she is in good hands. Rest easy.”
