In the afro hair community, keeping the hair healthy is top priority – and there are many ways to achieve this such as using protective styles.
Protective styles is any style that keeps your hair tucked away and free from manipulation. The overall goal of wearing a protective style is to give the hair a break from external stressors that cause breakage such as chemicals, heat, tugging, or even environmental factors.
Common protective hairstyles include wearing wigs and wearing your hair in braids. One of the most uncommon protective styles, but is actually very beneficial are closure weaves.
What is a Closure Weave?
A closure is a hair piece that is usually made of lace or silk to create the illusion of a scalp. When a closure is weaved through your natural hair, it is called a closure weave. Typically, it is attached on a cornrow base that is secured around the perimeter. Closures come in different sizes – typically 4×4 or 6×6 in size and in common shapes such as square and rectangles.
You must also know the differences between the material used for your closure. Silk closures are thicker than lace, thus adding the benefit of a longer-lasting, more durable closure weave. However, as silk closures are thick, they can become bulky and would pose a challenge of not laying as flat as how you want them on your natural hair.
Lace closures on the other hand are thinner, lay flatter, and cost less than silk closures. The downside, however, the grids and knots are visible once attached to the hair – so, it is mandatory to bleach them to keep the scalp clear of any dots.
Benefits of a Wearing Closure Weaves
Wearing closure weaves has many benefits. For one, it is considered as a protective style as it safely protects natural hair from factors that cause hair damage. Closure weaves literally act as a protective barrier as they are sewed in your natural hair.
Second, closure weaves hold more security when installed as opposed to wearing wigs. Since the thread is tied – or weaved – through your natural hair, it allows for at tight fit and a worry-free style. There’s no fuss about closure weaves suddenly falling out when accidentally tugged or pulled.
Third, closure weaves are inexpensive alternatives to wigs. Buying small pieces of hair considerably is cheaper than purchasing a whole head of hair. Plus, all you need once you have the hair pieces you need are a needle and thread to install it. Yes, it can take longer to install than wigs, but if you want to lower down on cost, closure weaves are your best bet.
Lastly, closure weaves can look more natural as they blend in your scalp. If installed correctly and the measurements are accurate, it can easily be styled naturally just how you would style your real hair.
Protecting Your Hair with Closure Weaves
Accurate measurement of the patches you’re going to use is a pre-requirement when you decide to protect your hair with closure weaves. So, before you go and purchase these hair pieces, you have to measure your head and find out how many hair pieces you need to buy and which size.
Once you’ve purchased, you must know that installing a closure weave needs time and patience to achieve a realistic look. Installation is fairly easy especially if you already have experience with using normal weaves. Here’s a quick step-by-step on how to install a closure:
- Braid your hair in cornrows so the hair lies flat and sleek on your scalp.
- Using a needle and a thread, sew down the closure within the cornrows tightly to ensure security. Note that if you start with the tracks first, you may not have enough space for the closure so it’s best to begin sewing the closure patch.
- Sew down the remaining tracks to complete a full weave.
Three easy steps to install a closure weave. However, it doesn’t end there. As a finishing step, cut the excess lace that looks unrealistic, and pluck the lines that are out of place. Some women also apply makeup to the scalp or bleach the knots just to make the weaves blend more.
Best Styles You Can Achieve with Closures
Closure weaves give you versatility when choosing to style your hair. Whether you want to cut off your weave locks and do a bob or keep the weave long and straight – no problem. Closures allow you to have flexibility. However, you should keep in mind that since closures are sewed in to your hair, the parting can be tricky. Middle parts are ideal for closure as it looks sleek and well blended regardless whether the hair is straight or waved.
While you can mostly do any style you want with your closure weaves, it’s best to remember that being gentle with them will help you maintain its longevity and look. Using a silk bonnet or a satin scarf can help protect the hair when you’re sleeping. Also, be kind when you’re styling, detangling or washing your hair. Treat it like a baby – be gentle.
Closures are ideal when you want full weaves. Although you may need to exert more effort and spend more time with the installation, closure weaves prove to be worth it once you’ve successfully installed them. Not only do closures protect your natural hair, but they also allow for a natural look as they blend easily with your natural scalp. Plus, you can enjoy different hairstyles and looks without actually fearing hair breakage.
