After his junior year, Berhalter quit UNC and joined the Zwolle soccer team in the Netherlands. Later, he played for Crystal Palace in England where he temporarily played alongside Jovan Kirovski, Sparta Rotterdam and SC Cambuur Leeuwarden in the Netherlands, where they later had American-born CEO Alex Pama. He scored once while playing for Crystal Palace, against Bradford City.

Berhalter signed a contract with Bundesliga team Energie Cottbus in 2002. He continued to play for the squad, making 111 league appearances, and served as captain as they won promotion back to the Bundesliga.

Berhalter joined TSV 1860 Munich of the 2. Bundesliga in 2006 and was made the team’s captain. In April 2009, Berhalter returned to the United States after a 15-year stint in Europe. His first club contract in his own nation was with Major League Soccer, which he signed.

He scored in the 103rd minute of the scoreless Western Conference final on November 14, 2009, helping the Galaxy defeat the Houston Dynamo 2-0 and advance to the 2009 MLS Cup. In 28 games for the team, it was his first goal.

At the end of the 2011 Major League Soccer season, Berhalter announced his retirement on October 12, 2011.

Berhalter took over as the US national team’s head coach on December 2nd, 2018. On January 27, 2019, he defeated Panama in a friendly match to record his first win as a coach.

At the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup on August 1, Berhalter led the United States to a continental victory.

At TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, on November 12, 2021, Berhalter steered the United States to a 2-0 victory against rival Mexico in World Cup Qualifying. The team consequently earned a spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and advanced to the round of 16.
