One of Kenya’s most famous witch doctors hails from Tala, Machakos county and goes by the name Anna Mutheu.
Mutheu defies the general perception that witch doctors live in squalid conditions as she leads a life fit for a queen.
The witch doctor owns an exquisite mansion which she estimated cost her a whopping N146 million.
“Most people assume that witchdoctors are poor and lead miserable lives. That is not the case. I am a woman of means, and my juju business has made me rich,” she told The Nairobian.
Mutheu’s one-storey house boasts a swimming pool and garage with high-end cars. With a steady stream of customers seeking her services, she earns good money from her juju business, Standard Media reports.
According to her estimates, she receives between 60 and 80 clients a day who pay N3600 consultation fee. Having 60 clients a day means Mutheu makes N1.8 million from consultation fees alone.
However, most of Mutheu’s wealth is not from juju but from the businesses that she runs.
She has invested in real estate and owns a petrol station, lorries and public service vehicles. Her pieces of land are located on Malindi, Tala, Nairobi and Nakuru.
Surprisingly, Mutheu is prayerful and regularly attends church on Sundays. According to her, the Bible helps her when healing clients.
Mutheu said she was introduced to the craft by her mother, who was also a witch doctor.
“When I was born, the spirit of witching was inside me,” she said.
Life in danger
Being so wealthy comes with its fair share of problems.
On August 23, 2020, Mutheu claimed her life was in danger after radio presenters claimed she had over KSh 30 million stored in her house.
The witch doctor claimed she had received calls from a private number and unknown persons demanded that she hands over the money.
Earlier in 2018, Mutheu was arrested after detectives raided her mansion and recovered 130 national identification cards.
She was apprehended for allegedly running a car theft syndicate but was later set free after the prosecution failed to produce evidence linking her to the theft.
