Early Life & Career in England
Reginald Kenneth Dwight, better known as the legendary Elton John, was born on March 25, 1947, in Pinner, Middlesex, England. He was just four years old when he realized music was his calling and began teaching himself to play the piano. The Royal Academy of Music in London recognized his exceptional skill by awarding him a scholarship to attend their summer program for young musicians.
John and his father, Royal Air Force pilot Stanley Dwight, had a strained relationship. He and his father had a falling out when he was an adolescent because of his plans for the future after his parents split up. John was inspired to become a musician after hearing vintage rock & roll recordings. And John, much to his father’s dismay, left school at age 17 to pursue his passion. He joined a band called Bluesology and took their name and another band member’s name to create his stage identity.
John applied to work as a songwriter for Liberty Records back in 1967. He was hired, and he and Bernie Taupin, the song’s writer, quickly formed a productive partnership. The next year, they moved to the DJM label to focus on songwriting for other artists.
John’s debut album, Empty Sky (1969), had songs written by both John and Taupin. Although the album itself was not successful, John’s first big single, “Your Song,” was included on his self-titled release from 1970. After that, they had a string of successes including “Crocodile Rock,” “Bennie and the Jets,” and “Island Girl,” all of which peaked at number one. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973) and Rock of the Westies (1975) were only two of John’s many successful recordings at this period (1975).
