Cody Rhodes began wrestling for his father, Dusty Rhodes, who founded the competition when Cody was only 12 years old. This, however, is confined to single bases and collisions. Al Snow, Danny Davis, Randy Orton, and Ricky Morton trained him there. In May 2006, Rhodes debuted in Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) using his real name, Cody Runnels. Pat Buck won his maiden race in the OVW Live Event on May 13 in Corridon, Indiana. In mid-August 2006, The Runnels established a tag team with Shawn Spears and were quickly drawn into a feud with The Untouchables for the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship. On October 18, they won the Untouchables for the first time.
Runnels and Spears won The Untouchables in a tag team tournament in November 2006 to get director Cherry’s program from The Untouchables. Cherry went to the arena with Spears and Runnels, and soon Spears fell in love with him, interfering with their performance.
On November 29, the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship was lost following a tie between the Untouchables and Runnels and Spears. Both teams will return to the Vienna Championship next week. During this stint, Cherry teams up with Spears and Runnels to form The Untouchables and help resurrect the OVW Southern Tag Team Title. On December 20, two weeks later, Runnels and Spears won the second round in a tie with Deuce ‘n Domino.
