At the age of 23, Elton achieved his first major success as the co-writer of the groundbreaking sitcom The Young Ones, in which he also made occasional appearances.

Together, they crafted the highly acclaimed Blackadder series, including Blackadder II, Blackadder the Third, and Blackadder Goes Forth. In addition to his television success, Elton ventured into sitcom production with The Thin Blue Line, a comedy set in a police station and starring Rowan Atkinson. The show, with its endearing characters and traditional format, received critical acclaim and won the British Comedy Award in 1995.
