Shortly after his graduation, Elton embarked on a fruitful career with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), becoming their youngest-ever scriptwriter. He made his television debut in 1981 as a stand-up performer on the BBC1 program Oxford Road Show. At the age of 23, Elton achieved his first major success as the co-writer of the groundbreaking sitcom The Young Ones, in which he also made occasional appearances.

In the years that followed, Elton continued to make significant contributions to British television. He wrote and appeared in the sketch show Alfresco, collaborating with notable talents such as Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson, and Robbie Coltrane. Elton’s solo scriptwriting ventures included the comedy-drama series Happy Families and the sitcom Filthy, Rich and Catflap, which reunited him with Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson.

One of Elton’s most celebrated collaborations was with writer Richard Curtis. Together, they crafted the highly acclaimed Blackadder series, including Blackadder II, Blackadder the Third, and Blackadder Goes Forth. This historical sitcom, starring Rowan Atkinson, garnered international acclaim, earning numerous awards such as BAFTAs and an Emmy.

In addition to his television success, Elton ventured into sitcom production with The Thin Blue Line, a comedy set in a police station and starring Rowan Atkinson. The show, with its endearing characters and traditional format, received critical acclaim and won the British Comedy Award in 1995.

Elton’s creative pursuits extended to the realm of radio, where he collaborated with Adrian Edmondson in a sitcom based on the song “Teenage Kicks” for BBC Radio 2. A television adaptation of Teenage Kicks was also produced, although Elton was replaced by Mark Arden for the series.
