Dame Alison Marie Rose-Slade DBE born November 1969, is a British banker, who was chief executive (CEO) of NatWest Group from November 2019 to July 2023. She became the first woman to lead a major UK lender after leading government investigations into the poor representation of women in business. She became a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2023.
Her career in banking began in 1992 when she joined National Westminster Bank as a graduate trainee. Over the years, she climbed the ranks and was appointed a member of RBS’s executive committee in February 2014. In her role as head of commercial and private banking at RBS, she implemented initiatives to improve gender representation at decision-making and board levels within the bank. Additionally, she encouraged her managers to strengthen relationships with small and medium-sized businesses. In September 2018, Alison Rose was chosen to lead the Treasury’s review, focusing on identifying barriers for women in business. The review, known as the Rose Review, highlighted that only one in three UK entrepreneurs were female and that just one percent of venture funding went to all-female teams. In November 2018, she took on the position of deputy chief executive of NatWest Holdings. Her reputation and accomplishments led to her being considered as a strong candidate to succeed Ross McEwan as CEO of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS). In September 2019, it was officially announced that she would indeed become the CEO of RBS Group, later renamed NatWest Group in 2020, making her the first woman to lead a major UK lender.
However, in July 2023, Dame Alison Rose faced controversy when she was accused of being ultimately responsible for the decision to close Nigel Farage’s bank accounts at Coutts. The decision reportedly stemmed from concerns that his views were not aligned with the bank’s values or purpose.
This led to criticism from some MPs and calls for her resignation. On July 26, 2023, Dame Alison Rose stepped down as CEO of NatWest Group, citing a “serious error of judgment” in discussing Farage’s accounts with a journalist. Despite the resignation, the NatWest board expressed its continued confidence in her.
Beyond her role in the financial sector, Dame Alison Rose holds various external appointments, including being a non-executive Director of Great Portland Estates plc, Chair of the McLaren/Deloitte Advisory Council, and a board member of Coutts Charitable Foundation.
